A new face of science is emerging – Dr. Jeanne Marrazzo, the incoming director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID).
Federal officials announced her appointment as successor to long-time NIAID director, Dr. Anthony Fauci.
This change in leadership comes at a time when the nation needs an informed voice on infectious diseases and allergies more than ever before.

Currently serving as Director of the Division of Infectious Diseases at UAB, Dr. Marrazzo has gained substantial visibility through her numerous media appearances during the COVID-19 pandemic, where she provided advice about mask wearing and other preventative measures that can be taken against Covid-19 infection.
Prior to joining UAB in 2016, she had spent several years at University of Washington where she developed expertise in sexually transmitted infections including HIV/AIDS.
Dr Lawrence Tabak, acting director for the National Institutes of Health (NIH), welcomed her appointment enthusiastically citing her “wealth of leadership experience from leading international clinical trials and translational research” plus managing large research budgets and mentoring professionals across different career stages.
As successor to longstanding NIAID Director Anthony Fauci who served since 1984 until his retirement in 2022, there are supposedly some big shoes to fill.
Dr Marrazzo will assume her role officially this fall 2023 with responsibility for a $6.3 billion budget allocated for research into innovative treatments for infectious diseases and allergies covering 21 laboratories.
