President Trump revoked the security clearance for Covington and Burling, the firm that gave free legal services to disgraced special counsel Jack Smith. The order came after Smith reported a “gift of $140,000” from the firm for his manufactured cases. When Trump signed it he joked he was going to name it the “Deranged Jack Smith Bill”. Weaponization should never be done against your political enemies.
Trump is taking no prisoners
The Presidential memo stated that anybody connected to this firm will have their security clearance revoked.
“I hereby direct the Attorney General and all other relevant heads of executive departments and agencies (agencies) to immediately take steps consistent with applicable law to suspend any active security clearances held by Peter Koski and all members, partners, and employees of Covington & Burling LLP who assisted former Special Counsel Jack Smith during his time as Special Counsel, pending a review and determination of their roles and responsibilities, if any, in the weaponization of the judicial process. I also direct the Attorney General and heads of agencies to take such actions as are necessary to terminate any engagement of Covington & Burling LLP by any agency to the maximum extent permitted by law and consistent with the memorandum that shall be issued by the Director of the Office of Management and Budget.”
A reporter knew what was on his mind and started, “At the outset of your administration, sir, you committed to ending the weaponization of government, to holding those accountable who participated in the weaponization of government …”
Trump interjected
“Hold it. This is a good one. Is everybody listening? Deranged Jack Smith — we’re going to call it the ‘Deranged Jack Smith Signing or Bill.’”
Once he signed it he said, “I just want to savor this one, please.” He then tossed the pen to the reporter. “Why don’t you send it to Jack Smith?”
Trump said this must never happen again
There was even pro bono work to try to slow the President down. “The weaponization of our system by law firms, even pro bono work they’re doing, just in order to clog up government, stop government — and nobody knows about it more than me — and hopefully that’ll never happen again.”
Smith was appointed in 2022 by then Attorney General Merrick Garland to investigate the president. The timing was obvious. Democrats didn’t want the Trump in the White House again. But their effort failed and some ran like scalded dogs. Just days before the President was inaugurated, Smith resigned.
