Beaches are often a popular destination for people looking to relax and have some fun in the sun. Unfortunately, one family had an unexpected encounter as they spent the day at Melbourne, Australia’s Carrum Beach earlier this year that left them terrified.
When they looked back on photos taken during their beach visit, they noticed something chilling lurking in the shallow waters behind them – a shark fin.
When Chelsea SES’s Facebook page posted about this shocking experience, locals were warned about potential dangers in the area and began debating whether or not it was actually a shark that was spotted. Some argued that it couldn’t be true as there wouldn’t be enough water depth for a shark to swim so close to shore.
However, others weren’t so quick to dismiss the sighting completely. After all, stories of sharks swimming along shorelines aren’t unheard of – just recently, a British family was similarly surprised when they noticed one off the coast of Spain.
While we can never truly know what lurks beneath us when we go out swimming at the beach or near rivers and lakes, there are certain steps we can take to keep ourselves safe from potential predators like sharks.

Also refrain from wearing shiny jewelry while swimming since glinting items could appear like fish scales or prey in water attracting attention from any nearby predators. Lastly, pay attention to your surroundings while swimming and don’t hesitate to exit the area if anything seems out of place or unusual – better safe than sorry.
