The man most poker players would consider the GOAT has passed away.
The Godfather of Poker… Texas Dolly… The poker legend, Doyle Brunson, is dead.
Brunson was 89 years old.
A True Legend of the Game
I cannot say that Doyle was the best when he died, but that is because internet poker ruined the game as an art form.
There has always been math involved, and Doyle was as good as anyone at figuring out the odds and if there was value to the hand.
If you read his book, “Super System,” you know that.
However, you would also know that Doyle’s game was more about reading people and making the moves at the right time.
The man just had a feel for when to play garbage and come up a big winner.
Just look at the hand named after him… The Doyle Brunson is 10-2 hole cards, one of the worst starting hands you can have.
It also happened to be the hand that made Doyle Brunson a world-champion card player.
In his later years, Doyle won quite a few hands on reputation alone, and I don’t mean just by people folding.
People would call him down just for the chance to say they beat him heads up, and Doyle would turn over his cards, and rake the trips into his stack.
Rest in peace, Dolly, we are going to miss you at the tables.
