Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) has been voted off the Foreign Affairs Committee on a party line vote due to her demeaning comments about the Jewish people and her anti-Israel posture. The vote was 218-211 with all Democrats voting against removing her. The vote is a win for Kevin McCarthy who promised to remove her over a year ago. Republicans are in power and they’re doing their best to keep promises.
The remarks were inappropriate
For the committee Omar was a part of so it made sense to vote her out. Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-MN) is a fellow Minnesotan. He didn’t think this represented Americans interests.
Emmer noted, “There is no debate that Ilhan Omar, the face of antisemitism in the Democrat Party, has no place representing American interests on the Foreign Affairs Committee. Ms. Omar is an embarrassment to Minnesota and our country.”
Omar was promoted
In February 2021 she was actually supported in spite of those remarks while Marjorie Taylor-Greene was thrown out of her committee by Democrats. McCarthy thought it was wrong for Omar to be on this committee, “Ilhan Omar should not be serving on Foreign Affairs. This is a new level of what the Democrats have done.”
Several Republicans were stripped of seats in 2021. Marjorie Taylor-Greene of GA and Paul Gosar of AZ were voted out of their committees because of their speech and social media posts. Nancy Pelosi refused to allow two Republicans McCarthy offered to the January 6 committee.
Omar lumped the wrong people together
She did it a couple times. In 2019 she introduced a resolution that would encourage anti-Israel boycott, divestment and sanctions or BDS. In 2021 she put atrocities committed by the US and Israel in the same category as the Taliban and Hamas.
The US and the Middle Eastern ally are not the terrorists the Taliban and Hamas are and her own party condemned her for that so she had to apologize. She backed down for a moment but later in 2021 she voted down a $1 billion investment in Israel’s defense system. Omar thought supporting Israel was “all about the Benjamins”. Finally, she downplayed the terrorist attack we had on 9/11 by saying the Council on American-Islamic Relations “was founded after 9/11 because they recognized that some people did something and that all of us were starting to lose access to our civil liberties.” That made a lot of people furious.
