Massive Freak Tsunami Creates Deadly Disaster

A freak “tsunami” injured at least two when a massive fish tank spontaneously failed. A five story column of water turned the lobby of the Radisson Blu in Berlin, Germany into an impromptu wave pool, which sent everyone surfing down the road.

Fish tank disaster

The wall of water dammed up inside the iconic aquarium turned the salt water fish tank into a deadly disaster on December 16. Over 100 first responders were called to the scene “at the Radisson Blu complex in the German capital’s Mitte district.

Their “16-meter (52 foot) aquarium” used to house 1,5000 tropical fish. Two people were confirmed injured by shards of glass propelled at high velocity by the surprise deluge.

As related by Berlin’s fire service “the cause of the incident was still unclear.” It was really cold that night though, which could have been a contributing factor to the bursting fish tank. What they do know is that “the aquarium is damaged, water is leaking.

Other than that, “the situation is not clear at the moment.” Besides the “unbelievable” hydraulic damage, “two people were injured by glass splinters.

The freak flood happened around 5:45 a.m. with “a very loud noise.” There was no other warning as “parts of the facade of the hotel where the aquarium was located flew onto the street.” Officials have a hard time describing the tank explosion event.

It could have been worse if it happened when pedestrians were wandering around. Berlin’s traffic agency VIZ reported “an extremely large volume of water had spilled over onto the street outside.” Berlin police simply state, “massive amounts of water have flowed onto the street.” Most of the fish didn’t make it but miraculously some were saved. Volunteers were running around with bags to scoop them up into.

A war zone

The area in front of the hotel resembles a war zone. “Littered with debris, the area has been largely cordoned off while the street on which the hotel is located — Karl-Liebknecht Strasse — has been closed off.” Guests are all safe, but they can’t stay there now.

All 400 guests who were staying at the Radisson hotel have been evacuated. They are waiting to be transported to another hotel in Berlin.” One without a big fish tank in the lobby.

Just prior to the spontaneous failure, outdoor temperatures “plummeted” over previous days and Friday morning was “gauged at around -7 degrees Celsius (19.4°F).

Formerly the “Worlds largest free-standing cylindrical aquarium,” the fish tank was housed in the “DomAquaree building,” a stone’s throw from Berlin Cathedral. Along with the failed “AquaDom” they also hosted the Sea Life aquarium.

The AquaDom was a really popular tourist attraction and guests of the hotel were treated to a “10-minute elevator ride through the aquarium.” That made it one of the “highlights of the attraction.

Engineers are going to be spending a lot of sleepless nights trying to figure out what part of their design wasn’t up to safety standards. Everyone else is just grateful that the disaster wasn’t a whole lot worse, considering a million liters of water in a five story tank hit the street all at once.
