American prisons are treating cartel leader El Chapo like a prisoner or something. He doesn’t appreciate that one bit. Don’t they realize who he is? The notorious killer is begging to “speak with Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador” about the “cruel and unfair” treatment. He’s hoping for extradition back to Mexico.
El Chapo prefers Mexican prison
Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzman is doing time in the Colorado supermax prison on drug trafficking charges. His lawyer, Jose Refugio Rodriguez, went on Mexican radio to relay Guzman’s plea for help.
“Joaquín asked me through verbal messages to fight for his return to Mexico. I see it as an SOS. He is hurting from a trial that was not in accordance with due process.” Not only that, he doesn’t like the food and there is little chance for escape. Mexico treats him much better.
Everybody knows that El Chapo ran the “multibillion-dollar Sinaloa drug cartel” with an iron fist. He was convicted in New York, four years ago, for “running an industrial-scale smuggling operation.”

They put him away for life. He didn’t realize, they meant it. U.S. prisons won’t even give him any special treatment, daring to handle him like every other prisoner. How intolerable.
El Chapo is stunned that he’s not being handled the same way John Gotti was behind bars. After all, he’s “Mexico’s most powerful drug lord, he ran a cartel responsible for smuggling mountains of cocaine and other drugs into the U.S.” Doesn’t that count for anything?
His lawyer says he’s not even being treated as well as other prisoners because he doesn’t like to speak English.

Unequal treatment in Colorado
According to Rodriguez, El Chapo “has suffered ‘unequal‘ treatment in the Colorado supermax prison where he is serving his sentence.” The ruthless criminal “doesn’t see the sun, the food is of very bad quality, there is no healthcare.”
Guzman “had a problem with his molars and instead of treating them, they took them out so he wouldn’t fuss.” How is that unequal? All prisoners are treated the same. He was expecting steak, lobster and all the comforts of a Mexican penitentiary.
Despite the fact that he started the interview talking about how Guzman verbally gave him the message, Rodriguez insists El Chapo has “had limited opportunities to speak with his lawyers and family.” The poor man. “Only six or seven calls since March 2022.” That’s better than nothing but how is he supposed to run his empire without communications?

Guzman also mailed “a letter to Esteban Moctezuma, Mexico’s ambassador to the U.S., detailing the request to speak with Obrador, but has not heard any response.”
The whole reason El Chapo is locked in his cell all the time, Rodriguez admits, is because he’s “prohibited from speaking Spanish.” To Guzman, that’s “psychological torture.” It’s also prison rules and applies to all of them. He’s not being singled out. He knows enough English to get by, just refuses to speak it.
The big problem for Guzman is that he got such a stiff sentence. He wasn’t ready for that. Rodriguez notes that “his client believed his human rights had already been violated when he was denied the chance to defend himself in Mexico and instead was extradited to the U.S. to stand trial.“
