Falsely Accused Bakery’s Award Bittersweet

In November 2016, Oberlin College accused the bakery of racial profiling. Gibson’s Bakery sued and won. The award will help, the case took a huge toll. Allyn, Gibson’s son, was involved in a fight with several Oberlin College students. Those students also accused Gibson of racial profiling and assaulting them. When police arrived, Allyn Gibson was on the ground being kicked and punched.

The Award helps financially

The Gibsons lost a lot. The bakery owner Lorna said, “It took a tremendous toll. A lot of stress, a lot of financial toll. It definitely hit us hard.”

Oberlin College staff and students protested the bakery and encouraged people to boycott it. School officials, the vice president and dean of students distributed a flyer saying they had a “long account of racial profiling and discrimination.”

The award might discourage the college

From doing this again. The college even helped protestors with food and supplies.

The bakery owners spoke to the New York Post in September. The incident killed the bakery. “A week after the incident, the school canceled all of our standing orders. … The school put out a statement that implied that this wasn’t an isolated incident. Our business from the students themselves and administrators … dried up completely. And the students kept showing up to protest.”

The award was for libel

The bakery’s reputation was sunk regardless that the students pled guilty to theft. The lawsuit was filed in 2017. Unfortunately Lorna’s husband passed away before the verdict was reached.

Oberlin College sniffed, “We are disappointed by the Court’s decision. However, this does not diminish our respect for the law and the integrity of our legal system. This matter has been painful for everyone. We hope that the end of the litigation will begin the healing of our entire community.”

Gibson’s attorney Lee Plakas hoped this would discourage people from jumping to conclusions,

“This should’ve really been a teaching moment for the college … and the students learned, they admitted their guilt, they apologized and went forward. I just hope that if incidents occur that people step back and try to find out what really happened and not jump to conclusions or listen to just a few to escalate something.”
