Unless I am reading the room wrong, it does appear that even Trump’s most loyal allies in the GOP are looking for ways to push away from him.
If not, they are definitely trying to make it clear to him that he should not be running for office again in 2024.
Some of his top allies in the Senate, as well as the usual anti-Trumpers, are all hammering him right now over the dinner meeting he had with Ye and Nick Fuentes.
Ill-Advised
Why Trump or his people even let Nick Fuentes in the room is beyond me.
It was bad enough that he was meeting with Ye, who has had all kinds of anti-Semitic complaints lodged against him as of late.
How someone at Mar-a-Lago did not recognize or do a quick Google search on Fuentes, however, is unforgivable.
To make matters worse, aside from Trump saying he had no idea who Fuentes was, he has still not condemned the man.
Instead, Trump continues to make excuses as to why Fuentes was in his home.
It is as though he is going out of his way not to insult the man.
In this instance, perception is reality, and Trump is just destroying his own profile.
Republican senators are pouring gasoline on the fire as well.
Senate Minority Whip John Thune (R-S.D.) stated, “That’s just a bad idea on every level. I don’t know who’s advising him on his staff, but I hope that whoever that person was got fired.”
Senator Rick Scott (R-FL) stated, “There’s no room for antisemitism or white supremacy in the Republican Party. Period.”
Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL), who is now considered a Trump ally, stated, “I hope he will [condemn Fuentes] because I know [Trump] is not an antisemite. I can tell you that for a fact that Trump is not, but this guy [Fuentes] is evil. And that guy is a nasty, disgusting person.”
Do I think Trump is racist or anti-Semitic? No, but I do think he is his own worst enemy and refuses to get out of his own way.
If he runs, I am firmly convinced that even though he will probably win the nomination, there is no path to victory for him in a general election.
He has to step aside and let DeSantis become the head of the party.
If Trump thinks it is bad now, if he runs and loses, he will become enemy number one to every conservative in this country.
Worse, he will probably create a divide in the GOP that could take decades to fix.
I would imagine if he runs and loses, his supporters just disappear, taking a massive chunk of conservative votes with them in future elections.
If he truly cares about the conservative movement in this country, he will put his ego aside and take a back seat in 2024.
