DC Council Member Whines About Migrant Crisis

Dc council member Brianne Nadeau tried to place the blame for the crisis of suddenly becoming a border town on two Republican governors. All Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Arizona Governor Doug Ducey did was call her bluff. Curiously, she also blamed Biden for not helping out either. The Pentagon rejected a request for the National Guard to be deployed to help. Democrats are embarrassed.

The crisis doesn’t have a timetable

Nadeau began, “So it’s been said, but it’s worth reiterating, that the governors of Texas and Arizona have created this crisis. And the federal government has not stepped up to assist the District of Columbia. So we, along with our regional partners, will do what we’ve always done. We’ll rise to the occasion. We’ve learned from border towns like El Paso and Brownsville. And in many ways, the governors of Texas and Arizona have turned us into a border town. We don’t know how long this will take to resolve. We don’t know how long they will continue busing, and so the right thing to do here is to be prepared to ensure we can greet every bus, we can get people off on the right foot, we can get them where they want to go, and that will ultimately help them in their immigration process.”

The governors will likely continue busing until the southern border is shut down. Biden created this problem, he can deal with it.

The Mayor acted on the crisis

Muriel Bowser declared a public emergency and put together an office for Migrant Services. Her declaration “establishes a Migrant Services Office within the Department of Human Services (DHS) and directs the Director of DHS to provide temporary services and supports to migrants arriving from the southern border states.”

Mayor Bowser is actually a supporter of sanctuary cities. The Washington Post wrote since spring, “more than 230 buses carrying nearly 9,400 migrants, including families with young children, have arrived in D.C. since Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) began offering free passage to the nation’s capital in April, with Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey (R) following suit in May.”

The crisis is a spectacular backfire

On June 15, 2019, Nadeau sniffed, “Our law enforcement does not cooperate with [Immigration and Customs Enforcement]. The Metropolitan Police Department’s policy is that it will not enforce civil immigration laws, which only create a strong divide between the police and community members. MPD officers are also prohibited from asking about residency and immigration status.”

But that came back to bite her. She stopped short of mentioning the impact of the sanctuary city policy on DC. Nadeau’s speaking was odd in that they’re on supposed high moral ground and being victims while at the same time paying no attention to the policies that caused the governors to act.
