After consulting with NATO allies in Belgium to go over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Joe Biden said that the United States and also NATO would react “in-kind” if Russia utilizes chemical weapons in Ukraine.
“Would the U.S. or NATO respond with military action if he did use chemical weapons?” a reporter asked Biden.
“We would respond. We would respond if he uses it,” Biden said, referring to Russian President Vladimir Putin. “The nature of the response would depend on the nature of the use.”
When asked to make clear the action if Russia made use of chemical weapons, Biden stated, “It would trigger a response in kind.”

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg claimed that making use of chemical tools would represent a transforming point in Ukraine.
“First of all, any use of chemical weapons would totally change the nature of the conflict,” Stoltenberg said. “And it will be a blatant violation of international law and will have far reaching consequences. And I think that’s the most important message to convey, that any use of chemical weapons is absolutely unacceptable, and will have far reaching consequences.”
The news comes soon after Russia revealed that it had actually used hypersonic rockets for the first time given that it started its invasion of Ukraine– marking a rise in the problem.
“The Kinzhal aviation missile system with hypersonic aeroballistic missiles destroyed a large underground warehouse of missiles and aviation ammunition of Ukrainian troops in the village of Delyatyn, Ivano-Frankivsk region,” Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Major General Igor Konashenkov said.
From the start of the Ukraine intrusion, Russia has continuously shown its determination to utilize even more damaging weapons to attain its objectives. Complying with Russia’s use of hypersonic projectiles, Putin’s Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov told CNN that using nuclear weapons was a choice if Russia felt it was existentially endangered.
“We have a concept of domestic security, and it’s public,” Peskov said. “You can read all the reasons for nuclear arms to be used. So if it is an existential threat, a threat for our country, then it can be used in accordance with our concept.”
In February, Putin dropped hints at his readiness to use weapons of mass destruction, saying, “No matter who tries to stand in our way or all the more so create threats for our country and our people, they must know that Russia will respond immediately, and the consequences will be such as you have never seen in your entire history.”
