Science VS Outright Stupidity

Double (and more) masks are no longer a joke, it’s reality. For concerned Ontario parents and those looking for the less expensive mask option, online hunting is the way to go. How many masks will be at least suggested before people question whether this is still science or being ridiculous? Both the N95 and the KN95 have become highly sought after once epidemiologists recommended them.

The science has said Omicron is more mild

But people are still chasing more protection because of how contagious it is. The Public Health Agency of Canada or PHAC is recommending at least one mask. The ones used for almost two years aren’t useless.

At least two layers of closely woven fabric such as cotton can be used with an option to include a filter. You can buy filters or make your own with the recommendation to replace them weekly.

The science in American hospitals

Only requires one surgical mask. Dr. Peter Juni is the head of the Ontario’s Science Advisory Table. He said cloth masks aren’t effective enough against Omicron. The doctor mentioned last month that, “The issue here is if you have a single-layer, the ability to filtrate is absolutely minimal and doesn’t make a difference whatsoever.”

Dr. Anna Banerji, a pediatric infectious disease professional at the University of Toronto’s Dalla Lana School of Public Health thought even just being able to work with a needle and thread could make the difference. Unfortunately the single layer mask is out of date. She spoke to Global News, “The single-layer masks that look cute, that just don’t provide a good fit, unless you modify them, they’re probably not very useful anymore. A surgical mask that covers the nose and mouth, that has a snug fit with a good quality cloth mask on top, could be a very reasonable option.”

The science says it needs to fit

No air should get in or out, continues Dr. Banerji. A second mask can cover up holes the first one might not get. Epidemiologist Dr. Cynthia Carr demonstrated on Global News, “The most important part is not really necessarily the extra layers, so much. The most important part is it’s sealing better around my face.”

PHAC offered if the ears loops allowed air in to tie a knot in them. Braces or clips could be used to close off the nose area.

The science says all need protection

Everybody, including kids, needs protection so some kind of a mask needs to be worn. Some can’t afford the N95, others have trouble with sizing.

Dr. Banarji again emphasized fit. “You want a snug fit that’s comfortable that the kids are willing to use for most of the day. So if you have N95s and they don’t fit well or they’re uncomfortable, then kids may not wear it.” Dr. Gerald Evans is an infectious disease professional at Queen’s University. He echoed Banarji’s thought. “If you have a lot of money and you can afford an N95 mask or one of those equivalents, go ahead and buy them. But if you can, get a medical mask — they’re not very expensive … and if you can’t afford that, but you’ve got some good cloth masks, use them, don’t forget to clean them and probably think about double-masking if you think that’s appropriate.”
