Newly released emails highlighted by Oversight Committee Republicans reveal that Doctor Anthony Fauci knew that the lab leak theory for the origins of the pandemic was a real possibility that had genuine support from parts of the scientific community. Fauci deliberately attempted to silence peers who wanted to legitimately and honestly investigate the potential for a leak from the Wuhan Institute Virology (WIV) to protect his own reputation.
Fauci denied legitimate lab leak possibility
Excerpts from the emails show that, as early as February 2020, Fauci was already being told that a number of respected scientists felt that the lab leak theory was at least plausible.
Fauci’s relationship with the WIV meant that admitting that a leak was possible would reflect poorly on him personally, in addition to damaging the narrative Fauci and his colleagues were pushing about the pandemic as a whole.
The emails make it clear that Fauci and NIH director Dr. Francis Collins had concerns other than honest science in mind when they agreed to discount the lab leak possibility.
The doctors expressed a concern that the lab leak theory would erode trust in science and damage a desired spirit of international unity in combating Covid.
There was a fear that admitting the possibility of a lab leak would harm science in China and strain efforts to cooperate with China in understanding and controlling the spread of the virus.
Fauci and the scientists he was discussing the topic with agreed that the lab leak idea should be treated as a dangerous conspiracy theory regardless of the minimal available evidence at the time.

Too much faith in China
The desire to work with China never amounted to much because China never had much interest in working with the West anyway, as Beijing has shown from day one.
Rather than appreciating Fauci’s efforts, China proceeded to withhold relevant information and accuse the United States of having caused the pandemic instead.
Fauci and his colleagues might have been motivated by their concerns about potentially hindering scientific progress in China, rather than helping the government in Beijing, but they should have known that there is no real difference.
In explaining himself to Congress Fauci has already claimed that he placed his trust in the Chinese scientists but not necessarily the Chinese government; this is either dishonest or shows a complete naiveté about China.
Scientific work in China is inextricable from the interests of the state. If there isn’t enough evidence to say that a lab leak caused the pandemic then it is because the Chinese would never let the world see that evidence in the first place, not necessarily because it doesn’t exist.
The scientists and doctors who want to identify the real origins of the virus are concerned about the topic because they want to know how to prevent the next pandemic. By refusing to entertain the possibility of a lab leak, Fauci was leaving the world at risk of another outbreak from China.
