Kelly Ayotte, who served one term as a Senator from New Hampshire, announced her bid for the state’s governorship on Monday.
This follows Republican Gov. Chris Sununu’s announcement that he would not seek a fifth term in office, ruling out a potential presidential run at the same time.
Ayotte is determined to protect the Granite State’s freedoms and safety with her candidacy for governor.
Ayotte has made it clear that if elected governor, she will prioritize safety by increasing penalties for fentanyl dealers to reduce overdose deaths.
She says that if she does not step up and take action New Hampshire is “one election away from becoming Massachusetts.”
The former senator wants to ensure that New Hampshire remains free of taxes such as income tax and sales tax; instead, people should have educational freedom without taxation interference.
Before joining the Senate in 2010 and winning by over 20 points, Ayotte was New Hampshire’s Attorney General from 2004 to 2009 according to Ballotpedia.
Although she narrowly lost her second term in 2016 by 0.1% of votes to former Democratic Governor Maggie Hassan, she is confident about making an impact in her home state if elected governor this year.
In her race for governor of New Hampshire, Ayotte will face Republican primary challenger Chuck Morse – former state Sen., while Manchester Mayor Joyce Craig and Executive Council member Cinde Warmington are competing against each other for the Democratic nomination spot according to NBC News Boston.
As one of only two states electing their governors every two years, this upcoming election promises significant changes within the Granite State depending on which candidate wins.
