Throughout the debt ceiling crisis, Joe Biden has always thought that he had the 14th Amendment in his hip pocket to play.
It turns out, he does not.
Even the White House has had to admit that, leaving Biden virtually powerless at the table with Speaker McCarthy (R-CA).
Will Not Work
Earlier, Biden seemed to think he had all the power.
He stated, “I’m looking at the 14th Amendment as to whether or not we have the authority — I think we have the authority.
“The question is, could it be done and invoked in time that it would not be appealed, and as a consequence past the date in question and still default on the debt.
“That is a question that I think is unresolved,”
Jean-Pierre was pressed on whether Biden would try to use the 14th Amendment to ram through a boost for the debt ceiling.
She responded, “It is not going to deal with the problem that we’re currently having at this moment, at this time.
“What we need to focus on is Congress acting.
“At the end of the day, it doesn’t solve the problem that we have now.”
McCarthy has already passed legislation that would give Biden a $1.5 trillion boost, but he does not want to sign and Schumer has refused to floor it in the Senate.
Secretary Yellen has now stated that by the end of the first week of June, the government will be out of money.
The matter was considered so urgent by Joe Biden, he went to Delaware for the holiday weekend and Schumer sent the Senate on recess.
With nobody else around, McCarthy also dismissed the House, which then led to House Democrats calling out McCarthy for sending everyone home without calling out Schumer or Biden for having bolted for the weekend first.
God forbid anything gets in the way of a politicians BBQ this weekend.
