Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is doing what he does best… not taking blame.
McConnell recently addressed the failures of the party in the 2022 election cycle.
It sure sounded to me as though McConnell was removing himself from blame.
Instead, he seemed to be pointing a finger directly at Donald Trump.
Candidate Quality
The new catchphrase for the 2022 debacle is “candidate quality.”
To that point, McConnell stated, “We ended up having a candidate quality [issue]…
“Look at Arizona, look at New Hampshire and a challenging situation in Georgia as well.”
He was, of course, referring to Donald Trump’s hand-picked candidates.
Now, I have been pretty tough on Trump for the failures of his battleground candidates.
Trump did not financially support any of these candidates even though, at one point, he had $250 million in the Save America PAC.
That, however, does not excuse the role that McConnell also played in their failures.
McConnell did not support these candidates because they were Trump candidates.
He even spent millions in Alaska to back Murkowski when she was facing off against a Trump-backed Republican.
No, McConnell does not get a pass and he surely cannot call “candidate quality” the issue when John Fetterman and Raphael Warnock won for Democrats.
McConnell failed because he has not addressed early voting, he has not managed to figure out how to take advantage of absentee balloting, and he pulled money from campaigns that needed it the most.
Oz, Walker, and Masters were all within striking distance in their elections.
Had they gotten any additional help, at least one of them would have won… of that I have no doubt.
When you lose to someone like John Fetterman, the idea that candidate quality even matters goes out the window.
Fetterman won because Democrats were able to protect him until 70 percent of their base voting in early voting, long before he stepped on that debate stage.
The GOP failed because party leadership failed, yet the same morons are still running the party today as were during this complete and utter debacle of an election cycle.
