One of the networks that covered for and praised Biden has turned on him. Jake Tapper on CNN scolded the president about his ever changing views on abortion. Tapper wondered if this would hurt his election chances, undermining his support from pro-choice advocates. He spoke with the campaign co chair Mitch Landrieu who put down Trump’s view, then praised how strong Biden was on it.

Tapper pointed out Biden’s inconsistency on this and that he was “all over the map”. He asked Landrieu, “Do you think his own long, complicated history on this issue — do you think it muddies his message, and undermines the contrast with Donald Trump?”

Landrieu responded, “Since his presidency, he has been very strong in his support of a very simple notion: that he trusts women to make decisions about their reproductive health.” In 1974 the freshman Senator Biden didn’t like the Supreme Court’s decision on it.

The Washingtonian reported he said, “I think it went too far. I don’t think that a woman has the sole right to say what should happen to her body.” In 2006 he was against it too. “I do not view abortion as a choice and a right. I think it’s always a tragedy, and I think that it should be rare and safe, and I think we should be focusing on how to limit the number of abortions.’

CNN working history

This year the New Yorker reported he said he’s “never been supportive of, you know, ‘It’s my body, I can do what I want with it.” Since 2021 he jumped in with both feet.

In July 2022, shortly after the Supreme Court sent the abortion decision to the states, Biden wrote an executive order to protect access to abortion services. CNN reported on that executive order.

The report said the “executive order attempts to safeguard access to medication abortion and emergency contraception, protect patient privacy, launch public education efforts as well as bolster the security of and the legal options available to those seeking and providing abortion services.” June of 2023 Biden declared abortion restrictions in Republican states were depriving women of “basic health care”.

Biden promised

At the State of the Union he said, “if you, the American people, send me a Congress that supports the right to choose, I promise you I will restore Roe v. Wade as the law of the land again.”

He’s doing the obvious. His opinion isn’t based on what he thinks, it’s based on how he can stay in office.

Tapper has a point, bringing up the question about not having a solid opinion. A codified law, according to left leaning legal scholars, is now a living, breathing thing, always moving. Biden is going along with that.
