Gun control activist David Hogg is living well these days due to donors giving to his PAC or political action committee. He created the group, Leaders We Deserve, after the 2022 midterm elections to give the chance for Generation Z age politicians to get into office. Kevin Lata, the campaign manager for Democrat Maxwell Frost of Florida, is his partner. It was launched on NPR with celebration.
The PAC is a movement
Hogg announced, “For every year of Trump’s presidency, I think there was a new chapter of a social movement that was born, whether it was the Women’s March, March for Our Lives, the environmental movement, or the movement for Black Lives.” The goal is to elect young Democrats, promising that his PAC would provide needed resources.
“[We’re] trying to pick them and say, you know, we would like to help you run for office, we’ll supply you with all of the resources that you need and help basically coach you and hold your hand to get there, which is kind of the gap that’s in the space right now, for at least young people at the state legislative level.”
But it’s another scam
It has raised a couple million dollars but the money isn’t going to where the mission said it would. It’s paying travel bills, consultants and legal fees. In 2023 funds were only spent on four candidates, one of whom was already in office.
The 2023 FEC filing said it raised a little over $3 million, reporting $3,035,868.87. That’s pretty good for a new PAC.
Hogg has more than one PAC
Leaders We Deserve took in $41,000 from a couple transfers from his other PAC called Ban Assault Weapons Now! This group was his first one Hogg created after surviving the shooting at Marjory Stoneham Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, in 2018.
The big donations didn’t amount to as much, less than $400,000 of the haul. It’s the smaller dollar amounts though that pushed the amount higher.
