January 6, 2021 will forever be a day engrained in the minds of Americans nationwide. Since then, numerous individuals have questioned what really happened that fateful day and why things fell out of control so quickly.
Now with newly released footage showing the crucial moment police lines collapsed on the West Side of the Capitol Building after officers fired tear gas at what had been a peaceful crowd, we can finally get some answers to these questions.
Veteran reporter Julie Kelly has reviewed previously released footage which highlights Ray Epps, who has become known as “the infamous mystery man” due to his presence in several videos between January 5 and 6 where he can be seen telling Trump supporters to enter the Capitol building.
In one frame, Epps is seen moving through police lines while talking with Trump supporters as he moves from right to left; moments later he becomes one of the first protesters to breach police lines. This raises serious questions about how involved Epps was in inciting violence that day – an issue that will hopefully be addressed when House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) releases all 14,000 hours of January 6 footage in upcoming weeks and months.
Bodycam footage from a Capitol Police officer also shows a large and growing crowd behind police lines on the building’s West entrance before officers decided to fire tear gas towards nearby construction scaffolding. Unfortunately for law enforcement personnel, this decision backfired as their own faces were affected by blowback while they were forced to retreat backwards away from their positions due to overwhelming numbers within the crowd.
Furthermore, one D.C Metro Police officer admitted that innocent people were hit by tear gas which only served to anger those present further – something echoed by another officer who said “we’re multiplying them by hitting em” – meaning more protesters kept arriving because of their actions.
In yet another disturbing clip shown during this new release of footage, protesters could be seen on stairs leading up towards West side entrance when a Capitol Police officer violently shoved an elderly woman down them causing her considerable harm upon impact with ground below.
Understandably this sparked outrage amongst those present with many shouting at officers afterwards in response – though it is unclear what happened after this moment due to lack information available currently regarding incident itself or whether any action was taken against responsible individual(s).
