Well-known commercial gym Planet Fitness recently came under fire after an incident that puts their “judgment-free zone” motto into question. Vermont resident and real estate agent Brandi Labounty was in the middle of her successful fitness journey, as she had already lost 40 pounds thanks to her workouts.
Unfortunately, during one of her workouts at Planet Fitness, she experienced an unsettling confrontation with management that involved the police being called.
Labounty had been going to the gym for four years when she was approached by a Planet Fitness employee who told her that fellow members were complaining about her shorts being too short.
This baffled Labounty because it wasn’t the first time she had worn those particular shorts and no one had ever said anything before.
To make sure nothing untoward was happening she asked all four other people in the gym if they found her attire offensive and each said no.
She then told the employee she would be finishing her workout but instead he called the police who came and escorted Labounty out of the building while giving her a trespassing notice saying she was “no longer allowed on the premises”.
As if Brandi’s experience wasn’t disturbing enough, when Cathy (Brandi’s mom) showed up wearing the same shorts that were deemed inappropriate for Brandi to wear, management also told Cathy they were too short – even though there is no indication of how short is too short according to their dress code policy.
This encounter caused astonishment from both Brandi and Cathy who questioned why this issue was taken so far as calling law enforcement officers into play.
In response to questions regarding this unusual incident at their establishment, Planet Fitness stated: “The safety and wellbeing of our members and employees is our top priority… After conducting an internal review of the incident, [we] have confirmed that they believe appropriate action was taken in this matter.”
However, since Planet Fitness did not elaborate further on what type of “inappropriate behavior” occurred it seemed like Brandi standing up for herself may have been seen as such – leaving many feeling confused about why such extreme measures were taken against someone simply defending themselves from false allegations made against them by another gym member or staff member.
