The Pentagon has just announced this evening that a second Chinese spy balloon was spotted traveling across Latin America.
This is a developing story with new details continuing to come in.
CNN has reported that while it is unclear where the balloon is specifically headed, it does not appear to be moving towards the United States.
This breaking news comes shortly after a Pentagon official rejected claims from China that the first mysterious balloon spotted over U.S. military sites is used for meteorological research.
During a press conference earlier today, February 3, Brigadier General Pat Ryder shared that the U.S. is considering it’s options at this time.
He also stated that the presence of the airship is an “unacceptable” violation of U.S. airspace.
Ryder stated, “We are aware of the (People’s Republic of China) statement. However, the fact is, we know that it’s a surveillance balloon.”
The balloon had been moving eastward at an altitude of about 60,000 feet, with multiple reported sightings this afternoon in Missouri as well as video and pictures of the airship being shared online.
According to defense officials, the balloon had flown over “a number of sensitive” military sites, which included the Malmstrom Air Force Base in Montana.
That base is known to house 150 nuclear warheads.
This information comes at the same time as a massive explosion being reported over the skies in Billings, Montana this evening, which many are speculating is in connection with the Chinese balloon.
