Congress finally decided it’s time to step in for a little oversight. Merrick Garland seems just a little too shifty and high-handed for America’s good. The FBI’s controversial raid of Mar-a-Lago was the trigger snapping the entire “Gang of 8” into action. Those are the top four decision makers from each side of the Capitol Hill political aisle. They have security clearance out the wazoo and they want to see that affidavit. Now. Without any magic marker lines.

Congress demanding answers

Merrick Garland thinks he got away with high-handed authoritarian tactics on TV, declaring that they’re the ones who really run this country. So, anything the FBI does is totally legal, always.

Christopher Wray thumbed his nose at senators including Charles Grassley, flipped them the bird, then jetted away with impunity. That smirk is about to get slapped right off his face and the weasel he works for at the Just Us Department will get splattered. When the Gang of 8 assembles in Congress to look into what sort of shady Deep State things the bureau has been up to, that makes it serious.

These are the congressional leaders “charged with reviewing the most sensitive intelligence information.”

Two people with direct knowledge of the request,” Politico reports, are demanding Joe Biden order his gestapo to hand over copies of “all the documents seized from former President Donald Trump’s private residence in Florida.” Congress wants to see all of what they allegedly hauled out and the affidavit, too.

This latest investigation into Donald Trump is so “unprecedented” that “Congress is unwilling to be a bystander in the political and legal fallout.” The August 8 raid was a historical first. Never before had a former president been treated with such indignity.

A full Gang of 8 meeting on the matter was called by Democrat Senate Intelligence Committee Chair Mark Warner of Virginia and his Republican counterpart, Vice Chair Marco Rubio of Florida. Garland and Wray have some homework to do.

Draw up an assessment

Warner and Rubio “asked the nation’s top intelligence official to draw up an assessment of possible national-security risks related to Trump’s handling of the sensitive documents.” The risk is that the public will find out how a “weaponized” law “enforcement” apparatus can operate in the shadows, to be used for partisan political gain.

The top dogs in Congress including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, Speaker Nancy Pelosi and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy will be joined by the top Democrat and Republican from the House and Senate intelligence committees.

None of the spooks are talking. “A spokesperson for the Senate Intelligence Committee declined to comment. A representative for the Office of the Director of National Intelligence also declined to comment.” One of the informants explained that all eight of the honchos running congress don’t need to agree to a big powwow.

The Gang of 8 and its staff routinely ask the intelligence community for specific information in ways that don’t always require sign-off from all eight members.

Capitol Hill staffers have been whining off the record expressing “frustration about the fact that Congress has learned little about the investigation into the former president, especially since it reportedly involves matters of national security.” Nobody’s saying much about those guys in ghillie suits rounded up along the border last week, either.

Alejandro Mayorkas keeps swearing up and down that a wide open border isn’t any sort of national security risk. Judge Reinhart wants at least part of the affidavit unsealed. He’s waiting for Garland to redact what he doesn’t want seen. Everyone expects that to leave about three words. Affidavit, Donald and Trump. The judge will then decide to let them get away with it or not. It’s a tactic meant to drag any meaningful action out until after November. Congress might have other ideas.
