Spying

Olympic Shadowy Spying and What it Means

Western governments are telling their athletes to take precautions and be on the lookout for Chinese spying at the Beijing Winter Olympics. Athletes from the United States, the Netherlands, Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom are being explicitly told to leave their personal phones and laptops at home in preparation for the intense cyber spying which is expected from the host country. Athletes are not being universally required to follow this advice, but it is being recommended very strongly.

Diplomatic boycott expands

Most of the Anglosphere countries have joined in a diplomatic boycott of the Beijing games. Athletes from the USA, UK, Canada, and Australia will still be allowed to attend the games, but official representatives will not be sent by those governments.

Lithuania, Japan, Sweden, Denmark, Estonia, and Latvia have all joined the United States in refusing to have a diplomatic presence at the games, condemning the actions of the Chinese government.

The Netherlands has effectively joined the boycott, though the country has preferred to cite complaints about China’s Covid-19 policies rather than offering a formal condemnation.

China claims that the diplomatic boycott violates the spirit of the games. The International Olympic Committee and the United Nations have not joined in the condemnation.

The Chinese would, given their record, almost certainly be spying on Western athletes anyway, though the boycott might make them even more eager than usual.

The governments appear to be very aware of this, though they have chosen to not make it a full boycott by withdrawing their contingents of athletes.

Athletes told to prepare for Chinese spying

The Dutch are giving their athletes phones and laptops which will be used in Beijing and then destroyed, minimizing the potential for China to track their activity or mine for personal information.

The UK is offering burner phones to all athletes and strongly advising that they use them, though the British Olympic Association says that they will not be required to do so.

The USA does not seem to be distributing burner devices, though it is telling athletes that they consider using them, or at least make use of virtual private networks in Beijing.

While China has denied that it will be actively spying on competitors, no one is likely to be convinced by this given the known extent of Chinese cyber espionage.

Western governments usually advise anyone travelling to China to be cautious and know that the Chinese government is almost invariably spying on foreign visitors.

It is safe to assume that any athlete from one of the nations joining the diplomatic boycott will be subjected to spying which will be even more aggressive than usual during the 2022 games.
