President Biden’s incompetence has become a real danger to global peace, with the world learning that the White House has no coherent response to the Ukraine crisis. After telling reporters only a few days ago that a “minor” Russian invasion of Ukrainian territory might be acceptable, Biden is now considering a major deployment of US troops to Eastern Europe. This would be a major shift in foreign policy but the White House appears to have not made up its mind yet.
NATO scrambles to make a plan
Biden will be holding a conference call with European leaders later today, after revealing in his press conference that NATO is divided on what to do about the Ukrainian situation.
Ukrainian leaders were reportedly shocked when Biden admitted that NATO is not unified in its approach and that a limited Russian attack might not be met with a strong response.
The threat of NATO backing was meant to keep Russia out of Ukrainian territory, but with Biden’s remarks Russian President Vladimir Putin can effectively disregard the international response.
Russia has amassed a powerful invasion force on the Ukrainian border; this may have been a bluff meant to intimidate Kiev initially, but Putin is now in a much stronger position if he chooses to attack.
Ukrainian forces are not likely to be capable of halting a full-scale Russian invasion and Kiev has been relying on Western support to deter aggression from Moscow.
Now that the president has told the world that NATO and the United States have not settled on a plan of action yet, there is little on hand to immediately threaten the Russians with.
Russia not backing down
The White House now appears to be thinking about sending troops to the region, an option which had not been raised previously and would be a major shift from relying on economic sanctions.
Biden could decide to send 5,000 troops to the NATO countries of Eastern Europe, with the option of sending more in the future. All of this would be too little and too late to stop a serious Russian offensive even the White House wanted to intervene.
Putin is aware that the United States is deeply and bitterly divided internally and that the Biden administration has consistently shown weakness and incompetence in handling foreign policy.
If Biden attempts to completely shift his foreign policy agenda at this stage by getting aggressive towards Russia the consequences might be disastrous.
Having realized that the USA has completely failed to deter Putin, the White House is now scrambling to compensate before it encounters another humiliation like Afghanistan.
When regimes become desperate to avoid embarrassment they get reckless, as the White House is now. When the stakes are this high, that recklessness puts millions of people in danger.
