One school administrator demanded this group of students remove the American flags they displayed on their vehicles due to them being “offensive” and “disruptive”. Luckily, this clever group of young men came up with an ingenious plan that ended in their principal issuing an apology to them.
When Franklin County High School students got into trouble for flying the American flag on their vehicles, they had no idea that it would take a simple yet bold move to remind school administrators of their overstepping authority.
At Franklin County High School in Virginia, three male students were proudly displaying our country’s flag when a faculty member was seen snooping around one of their cars in the parking lot. It wasn’t until the student was called into the main office that they realized there was an issue; school officials had prohibited them from flying the flag and chastised them for doing so, claiming it could cause distress to other students.
Rather than accept this infringement of their rights, these young men rallied some of their fellow students and performed a peaceful protest. With American flags attached to each vehicle’s tailgate, a line of star-spangled cars and trucks passed through the school parking lot—a powerful reminder that rights will not be infringed upon.
This demonstration worked better than anyone could have imagined: Principal Jon Crutchfield called to apologize and said that they boys were welcome to fly their flags again. The students took him up on his offer by displaying bigger banners than before with Old Glory firmly attached.
These boys understand that schools don’t have power over constitutional rights, rather, those rights end where school power begins. Thanks to this incident, others can learn this valuable lesson too—and hopefully we’ll see more displays of patriotism at public schools going forward.
