The tragic accident occurred when a twelve year old boy, Suleiman Hassan, was riding his bike and was struck by a car.
The medical team at Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem found that his head had been completely detached from the base of his neck.
Despite the odds being against him, doctors were able to perform an incredibly complex surgery and reattach his skull to the vertebrae of his spine. It is without question that this outcome is nothing short of miracle.
Suleiman Hassan, a Palestinian 12-year-old boy, was hit by a car while riding his bicycle. The ligaments holding the posterior base of his skull were severely damaged, leaving it detached from the top vertebrae of his spine.

It took several hours for Dr. Ohad Einav and other surgeons at Hadassah Medical Center to complete the delicate procedure that involved using rods, ligaments, bone grafts and implants to cautiously reconnect Hassan’s skull with his spine.
After a long recovery process which included wearing a cervical splint, Suleiman has not only regained mobility but also has no neurological deficits or sensory or motor dysfunction – something which Dr. Einav believes is “no small thing”.
Suleiman’s father expressed deep gratitude for all those who helped save his son’s life – “Bless you all…What saved him were professionalism, technology and quick decision-making by the trauma and orthopedics team” he said after finding out about the successful surgery outcome.
Marc Siegel, Clinical Professor of Medicine at NYU Langone Medical Centre added that what made this possible was preserving blood flow to the brain despite having suffered such substantial injury – something which isn’t commonly seen in children or teens due to its technicality.
