A ruling came down from the Supreme Court that had to be upsetting for Donald Trump on multiple levels.
With three of his appointments on the bench and a 6-3 conservative edge, there is no way Trump saw this ruling coming down like this.
On Tuesday, the court ruled to uphold lower court rulings that will permit the request by House Ways and Means Committee to obtain Trump’s tax returns.
Major Blow
House Democrats have about a gazillion investigations open into Trump, many of them regarding his business practices and if he benefitted while serving in the office of the president.
They have also stated that his unique situation offered the opportunity of putting more oversight in place to ensure future presidents are not profiting off the office.
Additionally, they want to check to ensure Trump followed tax codes and redo his audits to ensure all rules were followed.
In other words, this is a scavenger hunt to find anything for which they can take him down.
Trump appealed to the Supreme Court hoping he could block them, most assuredly counting on a win, but that did not happen.
The order came out, “The application for stay of the mandate presented to the chief justice and by him referred to the Court is denied.
“The order heretofore entered by the chief justice is vacated.”
There were no notable dissenting opinions with the order.
Trump’s attorneys were livid over the decision, stating, “The committee’s purpose in requesting President Trump’s tax returns has nothing to do with funding or staffing issues at the IRS and everything to do with releasing the president’s tax information to the public.”
Now the clock is ticking.
House Dems will surely make use of every second of their time from now until the new session starts and the GOP takes over.
Once the new members are sworn in, this investigation is over.
