As you probably know, Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle has resigned from her position.
That, however, did not happen until after the GOP raked her over the coals.
And trust me, this is not the end of her nightmare.
In the Hot Seat
Secretary Mayorkas has made avoiding questions before Congress into an art form.
He dodges, then when a Republican goes after him, he acts outraged, which was the playbook that Cheatle tried to use when she was in the hot seat, only it did not work.
You see, Mayorkas usually has Democrats backing him, but there was bipartisan outrage over Trump’s protection, so Cheatle was out there on an island.
Reps. Comer (R-KY) and Raskin (D-MD) demanded that Cheatle come before the committee to answer the shortcomings that day.
In their letter, they stated, “Americans have many serious questions about the historic security failures that occurred at the campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
“Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle must appear before the House Oversight Committee without delay on Monday, July 22 to answer our many questions and provide the transparency and accountability that Americans deserve and that are at the foundation of our government.”
Cheatle did show up, and she dodged as best she could, but usually the session for each member of Congress ended with a demand for her resignation.
After having her reputation drug through the mud on national TV, Cheatle finally succumbed to the pressure and resigned.
However, as I have stated before, she is not yet off the hook.
At the very least, I would expect Cheatle to face a civil suit from the family of Corey Comperatore, and a possible referral from Congress for her failures to properly protect President Trump.
She may be gone, but her resignation does not excuse her from accountability for the events of that day.
