An Australian woman can now proudly state that she is the world’s first survivor of what many healthcare professional describe as a deadly and rare bacterial infection. According to a 2023 case report, the 48-year-old woman became the first individual to survive Clostridium chauvoei, or “blackleg” for short.
This is an incredibly rare occurrence and one that could have ended in tragedy if not for the quick thinking of medical professionals.
Blackleg is most commonly found in cattle and sheep but on rare occasions can be contracted by humans, which was exactly what happened to this Australian woman while gardening without gloves. It is believed that her hands were covered in cat scratches which allowed for the bacteria to enter her bloodstream.

At first, she experienced nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea for three days with pain slowly growing from her right abdomen. When she went to a local hospital she was told her kidney and liver were failing due to a build-up of lactic acid which pointed towards septic shock though no signs of inflammation were present at the time.
Doctors prescribed antibiotics as a precaution which only made matters worse as abdominal pain grew more severe over two more days until finally blackleg was diagnosed through further testing. This caused a large hole to develop in her intestines part of which had to be removed during surgery before recovery could begin properly.
Even after diagnosis and treatment began there was no guarantee that she would survive as no other human had ever survived contracting blackleg before now making hers an incredible story indeed.
It took three months before she fully recovered from the ordeal during which time doctors monitored every single detail carefully doing their utmost best to make sure everything worked out alright in the end—which thankfully it did.
