It has already been a month since the world lost Hollywood icon Paul Reuben at the age of only 70.
Reubens, best known for his Pee-wee Herman character in the Tim Burton-directed movie “Pee-wee’s Big Adventure”, died on July 30 of this year after keeping his cancer diagnosis private for many years.
Now, his cause of death has finally been revealed.
According to The Post who obtained Reuben’s death certificate, he died as a result of acute hypoxic respiratory failure.
Healthline defines this condition as occurring when “your lungs cannot release enough oxygen into your blood, which prevents your organs from properly functioning” or if “your lungs cannot remove carbon dioxide from your blood”.
This is certainly a heartbreaking finding for those who loved him and followed his career throughout its course.
Unfortunately it would appear that Reubens had not only been dealing with this respiratory failure but also two types of cancer concurrently.
His primary cancer battle was listed as acute myelogenous leukemia according to The Post however, he was also battling metastatic lung cancer which can spread to other parts of the body or even the other lung.
The National Cancer Institute explains that acute myelogenous leukemia affects both blood cells and bone marrow, thus it must have taken its toll on Paul during this difficult time in his life.
At the time of his passing, Reubens’ rep issued a statement saying “Paul bravely and privately fought cancer for years with his trademark tenacity and wit.”
They went on to say “A gifted and prolific talent, he will forever live in the comedy pantheon and in our hearts as a treasured friend and man of remarkable character and generosity of spirit.”
A post shared by Paul himself on Instagram included a quote directly from him for fans following his passing saying “Please accept my apology for not going public with what I’ve been facing the last six years…I have loved you all so much and enjoyed making art for you”.
Reuben will be laid to rest at Hollywood Forever Cemetery following being cremated according to reports.
It appears that although we may have lost him here on Earth, his memory still lives on through all those touched by him both personally or professionally.
