Once the prosecutor investigating Hunter Biden was appointed to special counsel, various voices familiar with the case sounded off. Delaware’s U.S. Attorney David Weiss has been investigating Hunter for years. Attorney General Merrick Garland thought this would be a good idea so he could bring charges outside his district. Republicans thought this should have happened months ago.
Special appointment for “extraordinary circumstances”
Garland thought this was in the public interest. House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer said the stonewalling tactic has been used here. He complained, “The Biden Justice Department is trying to stonewall congressional oversight as we have presented evidence to the American people about the Biden family’s corruption.”
Republican Senator Marsh Blackburn spoke on Sunday Morning Futures that the President really needs to be brought up on impeachment charges. “It makes it more important because they will have subpoena power if they do the impeachment inquiry. And I think everyone knows David Weiss is not a prosecutor. He’s not a special counsel. He is a collaborator.”
Special counsel strategy
Maybe to move the case to a more Democrat friendly area. President Trump issued a statement through a spokesperson.
“If this special counsel is truly independent — even though he failed to bring proper charges after a four year investigation and he appears to be trying to move the case to a more Democrat-friendly venue — he will quickly conclude that Joe Biden, his troubled son Hunter, and their enablers, including the media … should face the required consequences.”
White House adviser Steve Benjamin declined comment since this is supposedly a private matter but that didn’t stop others from commenting. Jamie Raskin spoke on ABC’s This Week,
“From my perspective, it is the rule of law and the justice system working itself out the way that it does, and, you know, obviously, it’s bumpy and this side or that side doesn’t necessarily prefer this course of events, but our job, I think as political people, is to allow the justice system to run its course.”
Counsel isn’t special
Dan Goldman said on CNN that the appointment was indeed independent since it was done through the DOJ. He insisted that “Congress needs to stop investigating a private citizen and stop this fishing expedition to try to link President Biden to Hunter Biden’s conduct, when there is no evidence to support that.” Goldman spoke out of both sides of his mouth though because he conceded, “If Hunter Biden has committed crimes, he should be charged with them. I’m a Democrat saying that.”
Goldman also added that nobody better dare make comparisons between Hunter Biden and the Trump case. Gary Shapely, one of two IRS whistle blowers, thought the case has been slow walked. Shapely didn’t think Weiss had the authority to bring charges. Biden’s legal team didn’t think anything special would happen from this. Abbe Lowell, the attorney representing Hunter, said the “only thing that will change is the scrutiny on some of the charges.”
