When the debt ceiling legislation was put through, there was a major victory on the energy front claimed by Republicans.
That being the Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP) for West Virginia.
Numerous Republicans took a victory lap on this, but now Senator Joe Manchin (D-W.V.) is calling bullsh** on their claims.
I Did This
It is not often that I will stick up for a Democrat, but Manchin is right on this one.
He has been battling for this pipeline since I can remember.
As a matter of fact, this is why he sold everyone out on the Inflation Reduction Act.
This pipeline should have already been a done deal, but he got screwed by Senator Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Joe Biden on legislation after the IRA went through.
Manchin stated, “What’s the problem here? They’re afraid of who gets credit for it?
“You know, what we said before — success has many fathers, but failure is an orphan.
“Well, I guarantee you, I was an orphan there for a long time because I was the only one on the front taking all the spears and everything, taking point on this.”
“But I’m happy to — everyone is happy — to share the success. I think everybody knows how this happened.
“I mean, my God, for the whole year I’ve had the living crap beat out of me, back and forth and everything.”
Manchin later added, “It’s bulls— because they knew there was not going to be a problem on the Democratic Senate side or the Democrat president and his staff because they were the ones who supported it and got us 40 votes in the Senate when we voted.
“It was the Republicans that killed us when we voted last time — only got seven votes.
“And the Republicans have always supported permitting.
“The only reason they wouldn’t support that is because of the Republicans being upset about the [Inflation Reduction Act].
“That’s it. So it got caught in the politics.”
If Manchin wants to start placing blame, he need look no further than a representative from West Virginia, Rep. Carol Miller (R-W.V.).
After the debt ceiling deal was negotiated, she stated, “As I’ve said from the beginning, the completion of the Mountain Valley Pipeline is a product of the bipartisan, bicameral work done by the entire West Virginian delegation.
“When Republicans took back the House of Representatives, we made finishing the Mountain Valley Pipeline a top priority, something that wasn’t able to be accomplished when Democrats had full control of the government.
“Speaker McCarthy and the rest of the leadership team knew the Fiscal Responsibility Act was the path to complete the Mountain Valley Pipeline, and so we did.
“West Virginia and the United States will greatly benefit from the economic gain and energy production that will come out of the Mountain Valley Pipeline.”
Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.V.) also piled it on, stating, “After working with Speaker McCarthy and reiterating what completing the Mountain Valley Pipeline would mean for American jobs and domestic energy production, I am thrilled it is included in the debt ceiling package that avoids default.”
Looks like it is your fellow West Virginians selling you out, Joe!
