Justice was served. Stephan Cannon, 26, was sentenced to life behind bars for killing the retired police captain David Dorn June 2, 2020. Cannon got an additional 30 years for a string of other felonies. Judge Theresa Counts Burke threw the book at Cannon without the chance of parole. Dorn’s son Brian Powell encouraged Cannon to use this time in prison to turn his life around and help others.

Life is what you make of it

Since Cannon took a life, the remainder of his freedom is forfeit. His other counts consisted of Armed Criminal Action, Robbery, ACA and Burglary.

Counts Burke appealed to Cannon, “This is the maximum sentence the law allow. Your life does continue on and this is a choice you have to make, how do you continue on?”

Your freedom is gone

Powell spoke to Cannon,

“I hope your eyes are woke. You still have time to get everything together and make amends with your maker. We saw kids just like Stephan Cannon, and we tried our best to help as many kids as we can. We used to beat ourselves up and my mom, she said, ‘You can’t save everyone.’ And this is one of the young men that fell through the cracks. But he has time to try to get his life back on track. He may not ever see the light of day, but if he’s inside, he can definitely share with the other young men that may go to prison. Just share something that can turn them on the straight and narrow.”

So I’m glad justice was served today. It’s just sad. No one wins in this situation. Everybody is hurt. We’re hurt. His family’s hurt. No one wins. But we are just glad that justice prevailed today.”

Ann Dorn, the widow of the slain captain, was less pleasant, “He became a victim of the very thing he fought against. Today I chose to be a survivor. I cannot live my life as a victim. I’ll never give you a second thought.”

The widow is understandably traumatized

Dorn was having trouble forgiving Cannon. Maybe his maker might, but not her. The PTSD she got from the event forced her to retire.

The judge agreed with Dorn that the maximum sentence should be handed down. Cannon’s legal team will seek to appeal. Cannon insists he’s not the killer.
