This week, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu dropped a bit of a bombshell, a figurative one, on Gaza.
Netanyahu stated that at the conclusion of this conflict, he would expect that Israel would oversee the security of Gaza for an “indefinite period.”
That comment sent the White House into a tizzy.
Not Happening
Democrats support a two-state solution for Israel and Palestine, but that has not necessarily been Netanyahu’s endgame.
Even now, Biden has stated that once Hamas is gone, the Palestinian Authority will take control of the Gaza Strip.
Let’s not forget, though, that the Palestinian Authority is who turned Gaza over to Hamas in the first place.
After Netanyahu made his comments, National Security Council spokesman John Kirby responded, “We’re having active discussions with our Israeli counterparts about what post-conflict Gaza ought to look like.
“The president maintains his position that a reoccupation by Israeli forces is not the right thing to do.
“We’ll let them speak to their intentions.
“But we are definitely having conversations about what the post-conflict environment ought to look like, and what governance in Gaza ought to look like.”
This could start to strain the relationship between Israel and the United States again, something that would not even be in question if we had a Republican in the White House right now.
