San Francisco is Democrat controlled with policies that are soft on criminals so another business is leaving. Westfield is a real estate giant that’s following Nordstrom who had announced in May it would leave that facility. Westfield and its partner Brookfield Properties are both going through the process of offloading control of the mall. Nordstrom’s leaving had been blamed on, among other things, “unsafe conditions”.
San Francisco continued to degrade
Westfield put out a statement:
“For more than 20 years, Westfield has proudly and successfully operated San Francisco Centre, investing significantly over that time in the vitality of the property. Given the challenging operating conditions in downtown San Francisco, which have led to declines in sales, occupancy and foot traffic, we have made the difficult decision to begin the process to transfer management of the shopping center to our lender to allow them to appoint a receiver to operate the property going forward.”
The law isn’t being enforced there so criminal activity runs rampant. It stands to reason that the store’s performance would really be bad and that was another reason cited for leaving.
San Francisco foot traffic dropped
Shoppers will stay away if criminals are allowed to run free. Jamie Nordstrom, the chief stores officer, said that “the dynamics of the downtown San Francisco market have changed dramatically over the past several years, impacting customer foot traffic to our stores and our ability to operate successfully.”
In April, Whole Foods pulled out of the area. Drug use and crime were also cited as reasons for leaving.
San Francisco for immigrants
Crime doesn’t discriminate. An Afghanistan immigrant known only as Zaid opened a business there only to have to close it. The city’s lack of punishment resulted in his losing over $100,000 in merchandise and cash from his store Cigarettes R Cheaper. None of the thieves will face consequences. Stores get robbed daily.
Zaid noted,
“The politicians need to get a grip on this because it’s worse than Afghanistan or Iraq. At least in Afghanistan the Taliban will cut your hand off and people are afraid to commit such a crime. We have drugs issue[s], we have homeless issue[s], and on top of this these idiots come in here and take whatever they want. The city has gone downhill – especially the last two years since COVID, I’ve never seen it worse. People are afraid to come shopping here because they are either going to get robbed or someone will break into their car.”
