SCOTUS Justice Amy Coney Barrett recently made an appearance at the Federalist Society’s Antonin Scalia Memorial Dinner where she spoke on her transition from Notre Dame law professor to justice on the Supreme Court. Barrett shared her experience and how it has impacted her life as a mother of seven children.

Justice Amy Coney Barrett had not anticipated so much security when she transitioned from Notre Dame law professor to the Seventh Circuit and eventually the Supreme Court. She revealed that there has been an increase in security since Politico leaked information about their Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision earlier this year.

Protestors have even marched outside of her home along with other conservative justices’ homes on and off for months following. This increased level of security is something she must now adjust too – feeling confined but also grateful as it provides safety from these protestors.

Adjusting seven children through any major life change can be difficult, but Justice Barrett seems to be handling it well thus far. Her teenage daughter expressed embarrassment when being picked up in an armored vehicle but instead of avoiding it, they turned it into a funny moment between mother and daughter.

Even teaching her son how to drive with a constant security detail trailing behind them has become comical as he attempts to try losing them! Ultimately, Justice Barrett’s children have adjusted very well although they still aren’t “that impressed” with her job – being more impressed that she can roller skate or ice skate backwards.

In addition to parenting and adjusting to extra security measures, Justice Amy Coney Barrett is writing a book aimed at describing law and business of the court for non-lawyers – which happens to be finished already. During interviews she has also talked about relationships between colleagues on the court saying “the heat stays on the page”; revealing that there may be some tension between certain members of the court yet still maintaining professionalism among each other despite their differences in opinions or views.
