Gennady Zhidko was born in 1965 and had decades of experience serving in various high-ranking roles within the military structures of Russia.
He was most recently appointed as deputy minister of defense and chief of staff for the grouping of troops in Syria, as well as commander for the Eastern Military District.
His career included both successes and failures – he led an invasion into Ukraine that ultimately did not succeed, resulting in his ousting from his role in October 2022.
This incident also earned him sanctions from Western countries.
After Zhidko’s dismissal from his post, Colonel General Sergei Surovikin took over his role with Chief Valery Gerasimov’s approval.
Unfortunately, this replacement did not last long either – Surovikin was demoted after reports surfaced that he may have known about plans to stage a coup against Putin’s regime by Yevgeny Prigozhin – who is known as Wagner mercenary chief.
Suspicions led to Surovikin being detained on these charges.
Colonel General Gennady Zhidko left behind an impressive legacy during his lifetime due to all the positions he held throughout Russian military structures and operations abroad such as Ukraine and Syria.
Despite initially failing to seize control over Kharkiv city during his time leading Putin’s ‘special military operation’ which resulted in sanctions imposed by western nations against him , he will be remembered fondly for his service to Russia throughout his life.
Despite reports of Zhidko succumbing to a lengthy illness, news of his death has sparked controversy online on whether his death was actually more sinister.
