Police are still trying to figure out why an unidentified 28-year-old woman went to Covenant elementary school on Monday. She came in through an unsecured side door with two assault style rifles and a handgun. The female assassin murdered three young children and three adults before Nashville police neutralized the threat in an exchange of gunfire.

Shooting at Covenant School

News of a school shooting in Nashville, Tennessee, first broke Monday morning, March 27, and the story is still developing. Initial reports described the shooter as a teen who had attended the campus but that was updated later.

She is still believed to be an alum of the pre-K through 6th grade Christian elementary but older than she appeared. Police have her listed as 28.

The call to report an active shooter came in at 10:13 a.m. The shooter “allegedly entered the Christian school through a side entrance and made her way from the first floor to the second floor, firing multiple shots.” According to police, “officers entered the school and began clearing it when they heard shots coming from the second level.

A team of five officers “arrived on the second level and saw a female shooter who was firing.” Two of those officers “engaged her and she was fatally shot.” They raidioed in that the suspect was deceased at 10:27 a.m., 14 minutes from the initial call.

By Mid-afternoon, local time, Metro Nashville Police Chief John Drake was able to hold a press conference to update the public. He announced that investigators had located the assassin’s vehicle “parked not far from where the killings took place.

From the car or it’s contents, they determined her age and identity. They confirm it is “likely” she had been a student. “At one point, she was a student at that school – but unsure what year, all of that.

Exploring further connections

Other than the fact she went to the Covenant school as a child, police are still exploring if she had other, more up to date connections to the facility. They verified she is a resident of the city but don’t have many clues to work with at this point.

The son of a staffer was thankful his mom was outside when the tragedy happened. Three other adults in the building weren’t as lucky.

Alex Apple told local outlets that his mother “works at the school’s front desk.” She happened to be “at her car when she got a shelter-in-place alert on her phone notifying her of the unfolding incident.” She “got out of her car, heard the gunshots, so she fled.

Besides the three children and three adults killed in the shooting, other injuries are reported. It’s not clear how many were injured or the severity.

Fire Department officials released a separate statement noting they “administered life-saving efforts to those still alive inside the school upon their arrival.

Press officer Kendra Loney relates that once inside the building, her crews “were able to pull out those that had viable signs of life.” Parents have been directed to a reunification center set up by first-responders. Stay tuned as details develop.
