Every day in America, more and more of our freedoms and rights are stripped away from us. Now, this Republican senator is warning the American public that we might lose the one thing people use on a daily basis: the internet.
With U.S. Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) warning Americans of the possibility that President Joe Biden could use an obscure 1930s-era law to shut down internet access under the guise of national emergencies, it has become increasingly clear that our freedom and civil liberties are at risk.
The law in question was previously used to pause mortgage and rent payments nationwide, proving its power over citizens and how quickly it can be deployed. As such, Senator Paul is working hard to ensure our safety by trying to dismantle this legislation before it can be used against us.

“Some emergencies have been going on 50 years. They’re still on the books. There’s actually an emergency power that was given to the FCC in the 1930’s that gives the… pic.twitter.com/udkBCve4NU

The Western Journal reported on the senator’s comments regarding his efforts to protect us from potential abuse of this emergency powers law, which allows whoever is commander in chief to “engage a ‘kill switch’ that shuts down access to the internet”.
He also spoke about how during the Covid-19 pandemic response, this law was used as a way for the government to suppress misinformation while they paused mortgage and rent payments nation wide.
In his words: “When the CDC — and this actually happened some under the Trump administration — they decided that there was a CDC law for the 1930s that said you should do this and this for certain diseases, quarantine, and then it had a clause in there ‘and whatever else is necessary,’ the Trump Administration used that to say we didn’t have to pay our mortgages, and then the Biden administration continued that on.”
It is clear from these words alone just how much power those in charge hold over Americans if abused correctly. Therefore, Senator Paul understands just how important it is for him – as well as other concerned lawmakers – to do what they can now so people are not left powerless later on down the road when an individual with malicious intent takes office.
As he put it himself: “We’ve also looked at emergency powers…you know the courts have said you don’t throw out the Constitution during emergencies – but a lot of our legislation acts as if you could throw things away.”
