Best known for his role in the show “Dirty Jobs,” Mike Rowe was labelled a “fraud” by a popular left-wing social media site for promoting laborers without college degrees. Upon discovery, Rowe made the decision to step forward and set the record straight.

The world knows Mike Rowe from his iconic show Dirty Jobs, but what many may not know is that he has an extensive background in opera and a degree in Communications from Towson University.

Recently, “The Southern Gentleman,” a Facebook page with 71,000 followers, made an attempt at humor by calling Rowe a fraud for his educational background. In response to the accusation, Mike left an explanation that put the criticism to shame and quickly gained traction on social media.

Mike’s experience is vast- it ranges from singing professionally with the Baltimore Opera to holding a degree in Communications at Towson University. Despite this broad range of experience, The Southern Gentleman claimed he was a fraud because of his support for “dirty jobs.”

However, Rowe responded claiming that being educated does not make him fraudulent, rather it lends credibility to advocating for educational opportunities for new skilled laborers who are desperately needed in America today. He asserted that while he doesn’t offer scholarships towards university educations himself, he does run mikeroweWORKS which awards over 6 million dollars to 1,700 people who pursue careers in trades like welding and plumbing instead of four-year degrees.

Mike has also been very vocal about criticizing the student loan system associated with higher education as well as encouraging young people to think carefully before going into massive debts for college tuition. Fox News reported data supporting these assertions when they mentioned there are millions of job openings available for skilled workers yet filling them remains difficult due to lack of applicants or those qualified enough for certain positions.

This is largely attributed to the decrease availability of vocational arts programs in high school across the country coupled with universities increasing their tuition rates drastically over time. This indicates that while college can be beneficial depending on one’s interests and goals after graduation, there are certainly other viable options such as trade schools or apprenticeships which may benefit individuals more than traditional 4 year university paths depending on their interests and areas they wish specialize in later down the line.
