The Biden administration has given up on attempts to reach a settlement with illegal immigrants suing over their being separated at the border. The White House came under criticism from Republican lawmakers after reports emerged that the administration was being asked to pay as much as $450,000 to every individual family member separated at the border. The illegals are represented in negotiations by the American Civil Liberties Union.
Biden abandons talks
The astronomical amounts of money demanded by the illegal immigrants and the ACLU was apparently a step too far for the White House.
Biden himself, when asked about the $450,000 per person demand, firmly stated that it was “not gonna happen” even before the federal government had officially rejected the figure.
The president did not reject the idea of paying migrants entirely at the time but now the Department of Justice has abandoned talks and is planning to litigate cases.
Pressure from Republicans likely played some role in forcing Biden to drop the settlement negotiations but even without political pressure the demand from the ACLU was absurd.
The issue stems from a policy employed by the government under President Trump which aimed to crack down on the tide of illegal immigrants by detaining all of them, with special shelters set up for children.
It was a common sense strategy for tacking the border problem but Trump was forced to largely abandon it after receiving hysterical criticism.
No $450,000 for illegals yet
Obviously, none of the separated families suing should get a penny of American taxpayer dollars. Every single one of these people suing the US government knowingly chose to break the law and they now expect to be paid for it.
They are lucky that a temporary detention in separate facilities was the worst consequence they had to face for illegally entering the country.
The United States government is massively in debt and must borrow money from foreign countries if it wants to continue to perform even its most basic functions.
The economy is flimsy, inflation is skyrocketing, and decent jobs are very limited in much of the country. Biden should never have considered giving a single cent to these criminals from a purely pragmatic perspective.
The last thing the United States needs is a gargantuan payout to illegal immigrants which will invite millions of their countrymen to try their luck and set out for Texas.
This is one rare good decision from Biden and yet another incident to remind us that the ACLU is an intensely anti-American and radically leftist organization.
